cro protein

A protein made by the lambda bacteriophage which causes the virus to go for a lytic cycle (quickly reproduce, destroy the bacterium, and infect other bacteria) rather than a lysogenic cycle (become dormant) once the virus has infected a bacterium. It does this by getting in the way of the synthesis of C repressor, another protein which causes the virus to go for a lysogenic cycle.
