histone

A class of protein molecules found in chromosomes responsible for compacting DNA enough so that it will fit within a nucleus. Prokaryotes do not have histones. However, the DNA of the genus Thermoplasma (a cell-wall-less member of the domain Archaea) is surrounded by a highly basic DNA-binding protein which strongly resembles the eukaryotic histones.
