infectious pancreatic necrosis virus

A virus from the genus Birnavirus in the family Birnaviridae which attacks fish. It is highly contagious and causes severe, often fatal infections of the pancreas. It is especially prone to attack young fish in the family Salmonidae (the salmon and trout family) which have been raised in hatcheries.
