interleukin 1

A protein factor produced by macrophages (a type of white blood cell) which plays an important role in activating T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes when antigens or mitogens are present. Interleukin 1 and interleukin 2 are both known to be involved in achieving T-cell-mediated immunity.
