An organ found in vertebrate animals which has a variety of different functions, including digestion (by secreting bile into the small intestine to break down fats so that they may better be absorbed), storage and processing of various nutrients, and detoxification of the blood (by removing and concentrating the toxins, then secreting them into the small intestine via bile for later excretion).
