microvascular diseases

These are a group of diseases of small blood vessels which lead to organ and nerve damage, including retinopathy (damage/disease of the retina of the eye), nephropathy (damage/disease of the kidneys), glaucoma, and cataracts. Microvascular diseases are generally thought to be caused by hyperglycemia; therefore, people with diabetes are at risk. These diseases are aggravated by smoking and high blood pressure.
