Accumulation of twisted protein fragments inside nerve cells. Neurofibrillary tangles are one of the characteristic structural abnormalities found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Upon autopsy, the presence of neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles is used to positively diagnose AD.
