nitrogen fixation

The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into an organic form usable by plants and other organisms; nitrogen is typically fixed by bacteria that live in nodules on the roots of legumes and similar plants.An industrial version of this process which is carried out by chemical reactions or by bacterial cultures.
