A trench excavated at the base or toe of an embankment into which rock, rock gabions, broken concrete rubble, sack concrete, or other solid, large, non-erodible material is placed to serve as the foundation for bank revetment material. Use of a toe trench minimizes the chance of the revetment being undercut and slumping into the stream.
