The condition of a red blood cell which has abnormally shrunk, in general due to osmotic changes in its surrounding medium (blood plasma, usually) -- that is, the amount of solutes in the medium becomes much greater than the contents of the red blood cell so the water plumping up the red blood cell flows out of it and into the medium, causing it to shrink.
