A general term for any organic molecule produced by combining an acid with an alcohol. A derivative of carboxylic acid (acid with a carboxyl group -COOH) which has the general formula RCOOR, where the R's stand for the same or different aliphatic groups (alkyl groups), aromatic groups (aryl groups), or hydrogen ions.
