filariasis
A disease caused by the parasitic nematode worm Wuchereria bancrofti or Brugia malayi. The parasite blocks the lymphatic system and causes lymphatic edema, resulting in the swelling and thickening of skin tissues and the tissues immediately below the skin. The disease most commonly occurs in tropical regions and is spread by bloodsucking insects (which carry the larval worms). Selected filariasis links:
