flood plain
Lowlands bordering a river which are subject to flooding. Flood plains are composed of sediments carried by rivers and deposited on land during flooding. Level lowland bordering a stream onto which the stream spreads at flood stage. Part of a river valley made of unconsolidated, river-borne sediment that is periodically flooded.
