A molecule which exists as an ingredient, reactant, or intermediate in an anabolic pathway that synthesizes a particular product. The molecule is described as the "precursor" of that product. For example, procollagen is the precursor molecule for collagen because collagen is made from it. A condition or set of conditions which precedes something and/or is necessary for something to occur.
