riffle
Shallow section of a stream or river with rapid current and a surface broken by gravel, rubble or boulders. (Compare glide; rapids; run.) A reach of stream in which the water flow is rapid and usually more shallow than the reaches above and below. Natural streams often consist of a succession of pools and riffles. (Sometimes incorrectly referred to as a "ripple.") Selected riffle links:
