shoulder dystocia

Shoulder dystocia is the arrest of spontaneous delivery of the fetus because of impaction of the anterior shoulder behind the pubic symphysis, because of a disproportion between fetal and maternal size (in other words, the baby is too big to fit through the birth canal and his/her shoulder gets wedged behind the mother's pubic bone).
