Any of a group of polypeptide growth factors produced in the liver in response to growth hormones. Somatomedins promote growth by being nutritious to a wide variety of cells in the body, including liver cells (hepatocytes), lymphocytes, fat cells (adipocytes), and cartilage cells (chondrocytes).
