Sprue is a term for intestinal malabsorption disorders (characterized by indigestion, diarrhea, malnutrition, etc.) of tropical cause, non-tropical cause and gluten in the diet. A term that used less often today since specific terms for each disorder has been used instead. For instance, celiac disease is the term used for the gluten-caused sprue.
