Body-weight scaling is a rule of thumb rather than a validated equation. It lands close to the NASEM adequate intakes for average-sized adults while adjusting sensibly for people much larger or smaller.

Where the 'eight glasses a day' rule came from

It appears to trace to a 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation of about 2.5 litres a day — which included the sentence, usually dropped in retelling, that most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.

Eight 8-ounce glasses is roughly 1.9 litres, which is not a bad estimate for an average adult. It is simply not a universal one: it takes no account of body size, activity, or climate, all of which move the number substantially.

Does coffee count?

Yes. The belief that caffeinated drinks dehydrate you does not survive contact with the evidence. Caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, but the fluid in the drink more than offsets it.

Controlled trials comparing coffee with water found no difference in hydration markers across a range of measures. Tea, coffee, milk, and soft drinks all contribute. Alcohol is the genuine exception — it suppresses vasopressin and produces a net fluid loss.

Someone eating a lot of fruit, vegetables, soup, and yoghurt genuinely needs to drink less than someone on a dry, processed diet at the same body weight.

Can you drink too much water?

Yes, though it is rare. Drinking far more than the kidneys can excrete — roughly a litre an hour — dilutes blood sodium, causing hyponatraemia. Symptoms range from nausea and headache to confusion and seizures.

When your needs are different

  • Pregnancy adds roughly 300 mL a day; breastfeeding adds around 700 mL.
  • Fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea raise requirements sharply and may need oral rehydration solution rather than plain water.
  • Heart failure and some kidney conditions require fluid restriction — in those cases follow your clinician's limit, not this calculator.
  • Diuretics, lithium, and SGLT2 inhibitors all change fluid balance.
  • Older adults have a blunted thirst response, so thirst is a less reliable guide with age.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should I drink a day?

Roughly 33 mL per kilogram of body weight, plus about 400 mL for every 30 minutes of exercise. For a 150 lb adult with light activity that is around 2.5 litres total, of which about 2 litres needs to be drunk rather than eaten.

Does coffee or tea count toward water intake?

Yes. Caffeinated drinks hydrate you almost as effectively as water; the mild diuretic effect of caffeine is outweighed by the fluid in the drink. Alcohol is the exception, since it causes a net fluid loss.

How do I know if I am drinking enough?

Urine colour is the most practical daily check. Pale straw indicates good hydration; dark amber means drink more. For most healthy adults, drinking to thirst is sufficient — the exceptions are older adults and prolonged exercise.

Should I drink more water to lose weight?

Water has no direct effect on fat loss, but drinking before meals modestly reduces intake in some trials, and replacing sugary drinks with water removes calories outright. That second effect is far larger than the first.

Is a gallon of water a day too much?

A gallon is about 3.8 litres. That is reasonable for a large or very active person in a hot climate and unnecessarily high for a smaller sedentary one. It is not dangerous for healthy kidneys, but it is not inherently beneficial either.

How much water should I drink during exercise?

Roughly 400–800 mL per hour of activity, adjusted for heat and sweat rate. For sessions over an hour, or in the heat, include sodium — plain water alone during prolonged exercise raises the risk of hyponatraemia.
